    Политический и государственный деятель, бизнесмен. С 1833 жил в Детройте, где к середине века стал одним из самых успешных предпринимателей и миллионером. Бескомпромиссный аболиционист [ abolitionists]. В 1851-52 - мэр г. Детройта, один из создателей Республиканской партии [ Republican Party] в 1854, в 1876-79 - председатель ее национального комитета [ Republican National Committee]; один из лидеров радикальных республиканцев [ Radical Republicans]. В 1857-75 - сенатор от штата Мичиган. В 1875-77 - министр внутренних ресурсов США [ Secretary of the Interior]. Получил прозвище "Старина Зак" [Old Zack].

Дэвис [ Davis, Henry Winter], Б. Уэйд [ Wade, Benjamin Franklin] и др.). По ряду вопросов выступали против политики президентов А. Линкольна [ Lincoln, Abraham] и Э. Джонсона [ Johnson, Andrew]. Предпринимали попытки подвергнуть Линкольна импичменту [ impeachment]. В период Гражданской войны [ Civil War] их главным требованием было освобождение рабов и призыв негров в армию, а также принятие закона о гомстедах [ homestead, Homestead Act]. В годы Реконструкции [ Reconstruction] противились политике попустительства по отношению к побежденным штатам Юга [ South] и активно выступали в защиту гражданских прав бывших рабов, за конфискацию имущества конфедератов [ Confederates]. Наиболее значительным результатом их деятельности стало принятие законов о Реконструкции в 1867 [ Reconstruction Acts].
